“Sing in me Muse, and through me tell the story....” (The Odyssey)

‘Sing in me Muse, and through me tell the story...’ (Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’).......This is (so far) the piece that has by far the most blood, sweat and tears put into it.  Created from two copies of ‘The Odyssey’ (two copies in order to get the text from both the front and back of each page) and acid-free clear tape, I worked on this piece for hundreds of hours, on and off over the course of nearly seven years and nearly threw it away more than once it made me so crazy to work on it.  I didn’t think I would ever finish it, but, motivated by the opportunity to exhibit it in a lovely show called ‘Novel Constructions’ at the Long Beach Museum of Art a couple of years ago, finish it I did.......WHEW.  It is eight feet in diameter.  Times two.  It is difficult to tell from the photographs, but there are two circles, one hanging in front of the other.  They are mounted onto large plexi discs in order to give them weight and therefore hang smoothly, and they are suspended from the ceiling.  This piece was created in 2002, completed in 2009.
