In Honor of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month
In Honor of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month
“The victims of modern slavery have many faces. They are men and women, adults and children. Yet, all are denied basic human dignity and freedom. Victims can be abused in their own countries, or find themselves far from home and vulnerable. Whether they are trapped in forced sexual or labor exploitation, human trafficking victims cannot walk away, but are held in service through force, threats, and fear. All too often suffering from horrible physical and sexual abuse, it is hard for them to imagine that there might be a place of refuge.”
- from President Barack Obama’s Proclamation of January 2010 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month
I am very eager to host a screening of director Justin Dillon's concert/documentary film on human trafficking, "Call + Response" here in the San Diego area, and in order to (hopefully) raise some of the funds needed to arrange this, I am offering a special price (with installment payment options....) on commissioned thumbprint portraits during the month of January, now officially designated by President Obama as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month (click here to read the full proclamation, from the White House: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/presidential-proclamation-national-slavery-and-human-trafficking-prevention-month).
Normally $1,200, during January I offer them to you for $600 (plus shipping, if you're not local), $200 of which will be donated to a charity working to fight sex trafficking and empower survivors (this month I'm focusing on GEMS - Girls Educational & Mentoring Services - http://www.gems-girls.org/), $300 of which will go toward the licensing fees required to screen the film, and $100 of which will simply cover the materials costs (somewhat....) of creating the piece.
Thumbprint portraits are created using the patterns of your own thumbprint enlarged to approximately 22" x 33", and can be created from any number of things to reflect your tastes, loves, obsessions. Above on the far left the color print was created from movie poster images and titles from a list of the subject's favorite films. The two other color prints are children's portraits, and were created from the cover images and illustrated pages and texts from their subjects' favorite books. The two black-and-white prints were created from selections of song lyrics, quotes, poems, book passages and book titles. I have created thumbprints with cd liner notes, and am currently embarking on a portrait of my husband using maps from the various interesting places he's lived that have shaped him. (I'm very excited about that one.) The possibilities are endless.
The print comes matted and framed in a 27" x 40" frame, unless you request otherwise.
Please take a moment to read about "Under No One's Thumb" my celebrity thumbprint portrait exhibition/auction event, which is in development in order to raise awareness about the global problem of sex trafficking and in order also to raise money for organizations fighting the problem (there are a number of them, doing wonderful work): http://www.cherylsorg.com/under_no_ones_thumb.html
You can read about human trafficking and view trailers of the film "Call + Response" on the web site: www.callandresponse.com.
Thank you.
